Burial Service for The Honorable Dwight D. Eisenhower
The Place of Meditation, Abilene, Kansas, April 2, 1969
Chaplain Maj. Gen. Luther D. Miller, USA, Ret.
Former Chief of Army Chaplain

All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

He that raised up Jesus from the dead will also quicken our mortal bodies, by his spirit that dwelleth in us.

Wherefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.

Thou shalt show me the path of life; in thy presence is the fullness of joy, and at thy right hand there is pleasure for evermore.

O God, the Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ, vouchsafe we beseech Thee to bless this grave to be the peaceful resting place of the body of thy servant, through the same, thy blessed Son, who is the resurrection and the life, and who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

Unto Almighty God we commend the soul of our comrade departed, and we commit his body to the ground; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust; in sure and certain hope of the Resurrection unto eternal life, through our Lord Jesus Christ; at whose coming in glorious majesty to judge the world, the earth and sea shall give up their dead; and the corruptible bodies of those who sleep in him shall be changed, and made like unto his own glorious body; according to the mighty working whereby he is able to subdue all things unto himself.

I heard a voice from heaven, saying unto me, Write, From henceforth blessed are the dead who die in the Lord: even so saith the Spirit; for they rest from their labours.

The Lord be with you.
And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

O God, whose mercies cannot be numbered; Accept our prayers on behalf of the soul of thy servant departed, and grant him an entrance into the land of light and joy, the fellowship of thy saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Remember thy servant, Dwight Eisenhower, O Lord, according to the favor which Thou bearest unto thy people, and grant that, increasing in knowledge and love of Thee, he may go from strength to strength in the life of perfect service in thy heavenly kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Almighty and everlasting God, before whom stand the living and the dead, we praise and bless thy holy name for the good examples of those, thy servants who, having finished their course here on earth, now rest from their labors. Especially do we remember at this time our departed comrade, Dwight Eisenhower. We thank Thee for the memories which gather about this great life, his unending devotion and tireless efforts on behalf of our nation and the military forces. Help us to prize highly and to guard carefully the rights which such loyalty and devotion to duty have passed on to us. Grant that we may be true as he was true; that we may be loyal as he was loyal; and that we may serve our country and our God all the days of our lives and leave the world better as he did for having lived in it, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

In memory of a great soldier, Dwight Eisenhower, O Lord, God of hosts, may we his comrades gird ourselves to finish the work he began, that thy peace may come to all our troubled world. Make us aware, we beseech Thee, of the responsibility that rests upon us to teach the world that righteousness alone exalteth a nation. Make us willing to seek moral objectives together, that in united action our nation may be as resolute for righteousness and peace as she has been for war, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Heavenly Father, though all our sympathy goes out to these our dear friends, we know that sympathy cannot bind up broken hearts. Only Thou canst do that. We ask Thee now to perform that gracious and healing ministry. Help them who walked by Dwight Eisenhower's side - help them in this hour of grief and parting to rededicate themselves to Thee in a way that shall bring their troubled hearts thy promised joy and peace. We make this intercession through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, the great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant; Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, work in you that which is well pleasing in his sight; through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

21-Gun Salute

The march of another soldier is ended. His battles are all fought and his victories all won and he lies down to rest awhile, awaiting the bugle's call.

Unto God's gracious mercy and protection we commend you, Old Friend. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you. May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace, both now and evermore. Amen.
